First-round draft pick Knowshon Moreno was arrested last week for drunk driving when he was pulled over on Interstate 25. The running back was allegedly going about 70 mph in a construction zone with a speed limit of 45 mph.
Moreno failed both the field sobriety test and a breath test, causing the police to take him to a local detox facility. His charges include driving while intoxicated, careless driving, and a failure to have insurance.
His Bentley has customized license plates that read "SAUCED."
The team has released a statement saying that they are taking the arrest seriously and will be reviewing the matter internally.
A DUI is a serious crime in Colorado and can lead to jail time, fines, and loss of driving privileges. Courts may also sentence people to community service or require alcohol education classes. Sentencing varies depending on the severity of the crime and whether or not the person has a history of similar crimes.
Penalties for failing to have insurance include fines and possible jail time. Careless driving also carries fines and jail time. Anyone driving in the state is subject to these penalties, regardless of whether they hold a Colorado driver's license.
There are a variety of ways to challenge a DUI charge, including questioning the basis of the initial traffic stop and subsequent investigation. It's important to know that individuals have Constitutional rights in their encounters with the police. Traffic stops are no exception to those rights; individuals retain their right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures.
